Is there anything more annoying than an itchy scalp!
Itchy scalps can be caused by a number of reasons and finding the root cause can be somewhat frustrating.
In most cases it’s caused by an unbalanced gut microbiome. Treatment internally and externally is the best way to combat this.
Gut health information is improving by the day and there is lots of options and routes to take to improve your gut health. Introducing fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, natural Yogurt into your diet as well as a course of pro-biotics can help to improve your gut bacteria which will improve your scalp health.
Externally we can help the pH of the scalp using natural ingredients that you can easily get your hands on.
Scalp feels like it’s on fire? Try this recipe-
Frozen infused Apple Cider Vinegar Ice Cubes
You will need
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
2 handfuls of Chickweed (uk native plant available all year round)
Ice Cube Trays
Take 2 handfuls of Chickweed and pop directly into organic apple cider vinegar
Infuse for 2-4 weeks (the longer the infusion the stronger it will be)
Once infused strain out the chickweed.
Combine 50mls of your Infused Apple Cider Vinegar into a jug with 50mls of water.
Mix together and pour into ice cube trays and store in Freezer.
Once frozen use directly onto the scalp focusing on the aggravated area to help cool, bring the pH balance back to the scalp and stop the itch
You can also make this recipe without using chickweed by just freezing apple cider vinegar and water.
Soothing Cold Natural Yogurt & Honey Scalp Mask
Yes that’s right, Live Natural Yogurt!
This is a simple yet effective recipe that my Nanny Brooks taught me to treat bacterial and Yeast infection's.
People often think that yeast infections only affect the vagina, penis and skin, however, the scalp is often overloaded.
A 2012 study found that a mixture of yogurt and honey was actually more effective than an anti-fungal agent!
Check the side of the pack to see which live cultures are present such as Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, and Bifidobacterium on the store bought yogurt
I like using Kefir or Organic Yeo Valley
You will need
-Natural Yoghurt - Check the ingredients to make sure it contains lactobacillus
-Honey
-bowl
-spoon
Method
In a bowl mix 100g cold natural yogurt
2 tbs of honey
Mix well
Wash hair but don’t use conditioner
Spoon the mask directly onto scalp and massage in.
Leave to sit on scalp for up to 1 hour for best results
Rinse, shampoo and condition as usual
(Fragrance free shampoo & conditioner works best but not necessary )
