THE CURL PATTERN - KNOW YOUR CURL-TYPE AND HOW TO STYLE IT.

Unsure of what products to use, or what hairstyle would suit you best? A good first step is knowing what kind of curl you have.

1 being straight, 2A-C wavy, 3A-B curly, 3C-4A coily, and 4B-4C being tight-textured hair.

The bounce back test is a good indicator of the level of curl you have.

If your hair is textured, due to its natural bounces, the hair will either be wavy, curly, or very curly (coily.)

How to do a bounce back test:

  • Pull down a strand of damp curls with your fingers to its full length.

  • Take note of the point reached. (Point 1.)

  • Let the strand go.

  • Measure the distance between point one and where the curl naturally ends.

2.5cm - 10cm = wavy

12cm - 25cm = curly

23cm - 30.5cm = very curly/ coily

Hair textures

Do I have smooth or coarse hair?

Take a single strand of your hair and roll it between your fingers

If you can hardly feel anything - you have smooth hair.

If you can feel the hair strand between your fingers - you have coarse hair.

Depending on your preference, we can help either control your curls, or encourage them.

Controlling curls consists of reducing frizz, elongating a curl, separating it, smoothing it, and reducing volume. This is perfect for people that love their curls but simply want to tame them a little.

Encouraging curls involves creating definition, adding volume, bundling the curls together, giving a feeling of more curls, and adding texture to the hair. This stands out more and makes the curls look full of life.

Both of these methods can be practiced not only on curls and coils, but also wavy hair types as well.

Here are some tools that help with styling curly hair:

  • A fine mist water bottle is perfect for refresh days.

  • A microfibre towel or oversized cotton shirt reduces frizz and helps the drying process

  • Wide-tooth comb for combing with reducing breakage and frizz

  • The seven-row brush is a style of brush with seven rows of widespread bristles which are great for detangling and styling curls into clumps

  • Diffuser will help encourage the curl pattern

  • Diffusing sock for natural air-drying and will control the curl pattern

Some tips and facts we’ve picked up from the folks over at Davines:

Yes, shampoo should be used by everyone. It’s necessary for removing oils, impurities and product build up.

The frequency with which you wash your curly hair depends on your lifestyle, but generally, we’d recommend once every 5 days using LOVE CURL shampoo, and if in between shampoos are needed, use LOVE CURL CLEANSING CREAM to refresh your hair.

Your hair needs moisture if it feels dry, rough, it is frizzy or if it is dull.

Your hair needs protein if it lacks definition, feels spongey, feels soft or is difficult to comb.

Autumn at Wilderness:  oct '22

With the chilly winter air sailing in, we're preparing the salon for the cosy weather ahead. Have a gander below at some of what we've got coming up for the autumn, from wild swimming trips in Lune Valley to harvest-time workshops.

Lune Valley Wild Swimming

As our resident hair witch Lou works in our Lune Valley salon three days a week, why not join her on a Saturday morning at Devil's Bridge on the river for a refreshing wild swim? Contact her at wildernesslunevalley@gmail.com. It is the perfect time of year for it (if cold water therapy piques your interest) with less crowds flocking to bodies of water, and the temperatures not quite yet biting. We recommend those with prior experience for this. Cold water swimming is known to improve circulation, sleep and metabolism, to name a few benefits. If you cannot make these swims, perhaps accompany Wonderful Wild Women on their swim and coffee morning, also based in Cumbria. For Liverpool clients, there's also open water swimming based down at the Albert Docks.

Halloween

Halloween is our favourite holiday of the year, and we'll be celebrating with autumnal decor, hearty pumpkin soup to sip on while we taim your tresses, and a festive playlist of songs we've compiled to ease you into the season of the witch. Why not wack it on while you make your morning brew?

Wilderness Rest Rooms: Coming Soon...

Our wilderness rest rooms in Lune Valley will be an example of our celebration of the Japanese mantra, Wabi Sabi: which details getting back to a more simple way of living. The proverb discusses the beauty in imperfection, and the acceptance of the natural order. The style of the rooms will be a space of soothing energy, free from the clutter of modern life. Our rooms are still a work in progress, and there will be a small, medium and large space to stay in, which clients will be able to book regardless of whether they're getting a cut or not. Expect minimalist, simple and cosy.

Autumn Equinox

This Friday the 23rd September is the autumn equinox, the phenomenon in which our sun shines its rays directly on the equator, and the northern and southern hemispheres get an equal amount of sun. This officiates the end of the summer; the welcoming in of a new season. Some ways to celebrate are: making a gratitude list, visiting a local farm, or taking up something new to prepare for an abundant harvest.

Cost of Living

Usually we only trim curly hair dry, as it shows us what the hair will actually look like, but as a salon that cuts all hair types, we're offering dry express trims for straight hair (so without the usual shampoo treatment) over the winter to cope with the rising energy bills. This means the cut will be cheaper, and will use less water and leccy, which helps everyone. We want to aid with the cost of living crisis as best we can, without normalising how absurd the whole debacle is.

Autumnal Workshops

Read below to peruse the seasonal workshops we have on offer

We are hosting a few events to keep you all ticking through the autumn, the first being a  Women’s Workshop with Emma Jupp. The workshop celebrates feminine energy:

Sisterhood Circle with Emma Jupp - 9th October - Liverpool Salon

“Sisters: Do you want to bring more nurturing and supportive energy into your life?

Maybe you’re the only female in your household (or maybe not) and would love more interaction with other women?

Do you long to be around other women with aligned feminine energy?

Perhaps you want a place to regain perspective when life deals you lemons?

Do you resonate with some or all of the above…?

Or perhaps none at all, but you are curious and want to experience the magic and empowerment of sitting with fellow Sisters in a sacred space

If you have never attended a women’s circle before, you will be so very welcome. I hold warm, loving, gentle and yet powerful spaces, as a certified Transformational Coach.

Cannot WAIT to share more over the coming months….”

Women's Wisdom Yoga

We are hosting Women’s Wisdom Yoga on the 21st of October with Gina Torres. (Click the link to book by messaging Gina on Instagram.)

The Menopause

We also have a workshop dedicated to understanding menopause for those experiencing it, both in our Kirkby Londsdale salon and our Liverpool venue:

- 6:30 pm, Monday 10th October, Kirkby Lonsdale.

- 6:30pm, Monday 24th October, Liverpool.

- £65 for both workshops.

This seminar aims to give an understanding of the menopause as experienced by those who are transitioning through this natural change in life.

In the first half, we discuss symptoms of the phenomenon and how it might impact a person physically, emotionally and behaviourally. Menopause can span 18 years and may not only impact those going through it but can also affect family and friends.

Practices such as nutrition, psychoeducation, and holistics are fundamental in all health and are well-documented as means of supporting those going through lifetime phenomena, therefore the second part of this session focuses on well-being. It shares practical ideas that we may choose to implement into our personal regime to support our health and considers monitoring strategies that support the menopause.
